Georgia Sex Offender Registry

A person convicted of a sex crime in Georgia, upon release, must register with the sex offender list. There are three main tiers of offense on the list, which will dictate when you will be removed. Largely, these tiers are broken down on how “risky” the individual is to repeat:

  • Tier I: Those convicted have 10 years of registration (less serious offenses) and can petition for removal after 10 years.
  • Tier II: Required to have life registration with an option to petition for removal after 30 years, these are individuals who may not have been convicted of a serious offense but have certain characteristics that raise their “risk factor.”
  • Tier III: Those convicted have lifetime registration with NO removal option. This tier is reserved for individuals with serious convictions such as aggravated child molestation or multiple offenses. In some cases these individuals are called sexually dangerous predators.

A person on the registry must adhere to strict guidelines for behavior, which can include:

  • In-person reporting to sheriff multiple times per year
  • Cannot live within 1,000 feet of schools, day cares, churches, parks, etc. (severely limits housing)
  • Public website listing with photo, address and offense details
  • Restrictions on internet use and social media
  • Cannot work in certain professions or around children

These restrictions will follow you for as long as your name is on the offender list. However, an accusation is not enough to land you in this position. It must be a conviction, and with my help, you can fight the charges against you.
